Character Name: Ji-hyuk Kwon
Canon: Shut Up Flower Boy Band
Canon Point: In the middle of episode eight, when Ji-hyuk gathers the band in their practice room, and they Rock Kim for the first time.
Background/History: There's not a lot of need to launch into the setting of Ji-hyuk's world. He comes from a pretty typical version of Earth where no one has any sort of special powers, magic isn't a thing, and technology is what you'd expect it to be in the modern era. Nothing special there, just plain old planet Earth, in the South Korean city of Seoul.
Ji-hyuk's family situation is a little complicated, and more than a little unfortunate for Ji-hyuk. His mother, having grown up in poverty, spent so much of her time focusing on wealth that she completely neglected her son. Not only was she not emotionally there for her child while he was growing up, she wasn't there physically either. For the most part Ji-hyuk grew up without his parents in his life, and was alone for a good portion of it. When he was old enough to take care of himself he was living on his own in a rundown rooftop apartment. The only real connection he even had to his family was when his brothers' lawyers would harass him to give up his rights to his inheritance.
Unlike his family, Ji-hyuk's friends were a large part of his life growing up. Most of his early childhood was spent with his friend Hyun-soo. The two boys would do almost everything together, and Ji-hyuk spent more time at Hyun-soo's house than he spent in his own home. That is, he did until Hyun-soo's little sister was born. While Ji-hyuk never complained about his friend's attention shifting towards his new family member, it did mean that Ji-hyuk was on his own once again. It was some time after Hyun-soo's attention drifted away from him that Ji-hyuk started spending most of his time with his friend Byung-hee.
Byung-hee had a very different family than Ji-hyuk, but because his own home life was about as broken and miserable the boys found a lot of common ground. In their time together Byung-hee and Ji-hyuk began to learn how to play guitar, and eventually formed a band (Eye Candy) with Hyun-soo, and their other friends Do-il, Ha-jin, and Kyung-jong.
During their high school days the boys played in small club venues, got into various fights with rival groups, and generally weren't the most upstanding students in the world. In their final year their high school closed down, and they transferred as a group to a new, richer high school where they all stood out like a sore thumb. While they weren't initially all that inclined to stay in school at all they ended up staying (at first) for one big reason, Byung-hee's muse. Before they even started going to the school Byung-hee ran into a girl named Su-ah, in their first meeting Byung-hee decided that he was in love with Su-ah and that she was going to become the inspiration for the songs he wrote. As it turned out, Su-ah's father was having serious financial problem and Su-ah moved into the rooftop apartment across from Ji-hyuk.
During their stay at their new high school the Eye Candy boys formed a new rivalry with Su-ah's childhood friend, Seung-hoon, and his band, Strawberry Fields. They boys had several altercations with Strawberry Fields, including an early one that led to the destruction of Eye Candy's drum set. One of Strawberry Fields members, Pyo-joo, promised Byung-hee that he'd replace the drum set, but when Byung-hee came out to meet him he had his friends jump Byung-hee and beat him senseless.
While attempting to flee his assailants Byung-hee called Ji-hyuk to come bail him out of trouble. Unfortunately for him, Ji-hyuk picked up the phone several minutes later. He called together the rest of their band, and the boys were able to find a bleeding but still breathing Byung-hee staggering towards them. There was a moment of relief at seeing their friend still (mostly) intact, but it didn't last long. In his escape Byung-hee had wandered into the road, and before he could safely reach his friends he was tragically hit by a truck.
The death had a heavy impact on Ji-hyuk and his friends. For a period of time the boys debated quitting the school completely until Ji-hyuk found an advertisement Byung-hee had saved for a band contest that he had entered Eye Candy in without telling the other members. The catch to the contest was that all the members had to be enrolled high school students. From that point on the boys had to play it safe in order not to get kicked out of their new school while also keeping up with their practice. During this time Ji-hyuk also grew closer to his new neighbor, Su-ah, their relationship made complicated by the fact that she was the girl that Byung-hee liked.
When the time for the band contest finally came, Hyun-soo got into an accident that damaged his hand, and forced Eye Candy go give up partway through their performance. The boys were upset and discouraged, feeling like they'd let Byung-hee down by not winning. When things seemed bleak once more Eye Candy got a surprising call from an entertainment company looking to work out some contracts with the boys. Unfortunately for them there were only two members the company wanted to sign, Ji-hyuk and Hyun-soo. Ji-hyuk tore up the contract offered to him without a second thought and left with his band.
Personality: Imagine the typical grungy garage band kid with a bad attitude and no respect for authority. Got that image in mind? There you go, you've just pictured Ji-hyuk. This image isn't skin deep with this kid, in a lot of ways Ji-hyuk embodies the stereotype of a no-good punk. It's not that he's necessarily a bad kid, but it might be a stretch to call him a good one either. For the most part his heart is in the right place, but to say he's rough around the edges is actually being kind of generous.
For starters they don't come much more hard headed than Ji-hyuk. It can be a double edged sword of sorts. On one hand it makes working with him an absolute nightmare. He's not exactly great about listening to authority figures, which is hell for his teachers and managers. Even if he agrees to something, he'll usually ignore the rules other people set out for him and do whatever he wants to. Don't go out after dark? Looks like it's time to head out that very night. Don't get into fights? Time to get into a huge brawl first chance he gets. His ability to follow other people's instructions is pretty much nonexistent. On the other hand he also doesn't give up easily. When Ji-hyuk sets his mind on something he'll work towards that goal until he makes it or breaks it. And breaks it is the key term here. Ji-hyuk will toss everything he's got into whatever he happens to be working towards at the moment, and it doesn't always work out well for him.
The possibility that things might not go well is not something Ji-hyuk stops to think about either. Ji-hyuk can be incredibly quick to make snap judgement calls without fully thinking out the consequences... or thinking out the consequences at all. When something serious is happening right in front of him (someone is in danger, his friend is getting into a fight, etc...) he's more than ready to jump right into the thick of it. Often times these choices to get involved end up having some pretty negative long term consequences for him. At the same time, despite how rash he can be in the heat of the moment, Ji-hyuk is also surprisingly level-headed most of the time. If he's not feeling emotionally charged about a situation, or he's given time to think things over then he tends to be able to approach a problem in a pretty practical and reasonable way.
The problem is finding a situation that Ji-hyuk isn't feeling emotionally charged about. Ji-hyuk's got a temper on him. While he isn't as immediately explosive or over the top as some of his friends it doesn't take much to irritate him, and it's scarily easy to provoke him into fight. Ji-hyuk's not exactly a violent person in that he's not one to lash out at an innocent person, children, or women. But oh man, if another guy tries to pick a fight with him he'll start throwing punches at the drop of a hat.
The fastest way to get him to fight with you? Do something bad to one of his friends. Ji-hyuk is loyal to the bone, and will do anything at all to protect his friends on every possible level. Not only will he leap into a fray to defend them, but he'll sacrifice his own dreams and well being for theirs. He goes above and beyond the call of duty for a normal level of friendship, because his friends pretty much are his family. Considering how distant Ji-hyuk was from his mother growing up, the only people that were there for him and provided him with emotional support and love were his bandmates.
That fact did mess the kid up a little on an emotional level. He has no fondness whatsoever for his mom. The last time she tries to approach him, Ji-hyuk flat out tells the woman that he has no mother, and makes it clear he has no interest in ever seeing her again. Over the course of the series a reconciliation between the two never occurs either, and Ji-hyuk's ties to his family remained severed. Not having any family to rely on meant that Ji-hyuk grew up a lonely kid. While he had his friends Hyun-soo and later Byung-hee to keep him company, it didn't kill the loneliness completely.
It also didn't help much with his people skills. While Ji-hyuk's not exactly socially inept, he does have his moments. Ji-hyuk is very friendly and physically affectionate with his friend, but can come across as distant, unfriendly and sometimes even menacing to strangers. He can also be blunt to the point of tactless at time, and is not someone who should ever be doing any sort of public speaking. He's also kind of iffy with the whole expressing emotions thing, or being honest with emotions, and on occasion understanding emotions. Honestly, emotions in general just give him problems. It doesn't help with things like his inability to apologize when he's in the wrong for something (especially small and stupid things), or being able to give friends the emotional support and reassurance they need sometimes.
Still, even if he doesn't always have the right words to help comfort a person, or have the best approach to help them though, he's still a steadfast friend. He's someone that can usually be counted on to pull through for people in the end. And not just for his friends either, Ji-hyuk is pretty quick to help out people he barely knows when it looks like they're in a dangerous situation. He's got something of a hero complex going on, and it leads to some pretty self-sacrificial moments on his part.
Lastly, Ji-hyuk loves music. Music was something he discovered with his friend Byung-hee, and it's one of the only skills he's really got going for him in life.
Abilities/Powers: Not a whole heck of a lot. He's got the athletic abilities of your average physically active eighteen year old, but doesn't have any sort of special powers or skills.
Items/Weapons: His cellphone (which when turned on will just give him a blank, glowing screen, and will soon run out of batteries), and his (formerly Byung-hee's) guitar.
Sample Entry: [ When the video first starts up Ji-hyuk isn't even looking at the camera. He's staring blankly somewhere off to the side for a good few seconds before he finally takes a side ways glance at the camera. With a deep inhale he rubs his thumb against the side of his nose and clears his throat. ]
Hey.
[ A pause. Off too a great start. ]
Some of you have been here for a long time. You should know what's out there.
[ And to make sure no one asks him what he's talking about he turns his phone away from his face, past a garden, and-- Yes, there it is. The inky blackness. He's even stepping closer to it so people can get a better view, but still keeps some distance. Having felt that weird menacing aura, he's not overly keen to get close again, but he wanted his question answered before he left too.
Not necessarily a smart move. ]
It's different than the rest of this town up here for a reason, right? And there's something with eyes out in all of that--
[ Camera back on him, vague pointing to the darkness because he can't think of the word he wants to use right now. ]
... That. So tell me, who's seen what's actually over the edge there?
Sample Entry Two: The sky was gloomy and overcast, but somehow that seemed fitting for the rundown town of Haven. Though it wasn't as if the weather was the same every single day of the week it always stuck Ji-hyuk as sort of poetic when the days looked as dreary as this place made him feel. He stifled a yawn as he leaned against the stained grocery store walls while clutching a half eaten bag of chips in other hand. He had never eaten well at home, but he was honestly having trouble remembering the last time he'd had a decent meal since coming to this place. Without running power to keep things refrigerated Ji-hyuk wasn't sure how much he really trusted most of the food he found in these stores, and without any sort of electricity to power a microwave or stove he didn't have a whole lot to work with when it came to cooking.
It was best to just stick with the overly preserved precooked foods he didn't have to worry about making him deathly ill. It was hard to say what would happen to you if you suddenly came down with food poisoning in a place like this, but Ji-hyuk wasn't overly interested in finding that out for himself.
He slide his foot across a barren patch of soil smoothing out a large patch in front of him. With a frown Ji-hyuk surveyed the area around him to make sure no one else was there before he started writing in the dirt with the toe of his shoe. The letters were large and clunky, and he couldn't write out much in the limited patch of dirt he'd made for himself, but he still managed to dig out the first few words to Byung-hee's song. Something he hadn't had a chance to sing or even think about in the few weeks that he'd been stuck in Haven.
A flicker of movement in his peripheral vision snapped him back to attention. Ji-hyuk's head jerked towards the street, but by the time he'd focused on where the movement had been the road was empty. Not exactly an uncommon occurrence at Haven, but it still made Ji-hyuk feel uneasy. His jaw clenched as he glanced down the street in both directions. Nothing.
Tightening his grip on his bag of chips he quickly scuffed out the words he'd written in the dirt with the toe of his shoe. There wasn't any real point in doing it, the words would disappear in under an hour all on their own, but Ji-hyuk had this vaguely irrational feeling that he didn't want whatever had been moving down the street to see what he'd been writing. Stupid, considering there wasn't anything there. He stopped tearing up the dirt in front of him to take one last look at the road.
There never seemed to be anything there when he finally got around to looking. Not really.
With a sigh he shook his head, trying to shake off the feeling he was having, and set off in the opposite direction. Back towards the apartments.
